Old-Fashioned Brown Sugar Candy

We don’t often find ourselves making candies, since we prefer to spend our efforts in the kitchen making things that we know will be better from-scratch as opposed to things we can buy from trusted candy stores…but these old fashioned brown sugar candies are a rare exception for us, so you know they have to be good.

INGREDIENTS
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cubed
3 cups brown sugar
1 (5 oz.) can evaporated milk
1 pound powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

PREPARATION
Line a 9-inch square baking dish with parchment paper or butter or non-stick spray.
Stir milk, brown sugar and butter together in a large saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 5 minutes, stirring continuously.
Remove from heat and use a hand mixer to beat in powdered sugar, vanilla extract, salt and walnuts. Beat until just thickened.
Pour/transfer mixture to prepared baking dish and let cool until set.
When ready to serve, slice into squares and enjoy.
