10 Best Foods for Your Liver

Your liver is the football-sized organ that sits just above your stomach but below your diaphragm on the right side of your abdomen. It filters the blood coming from the digestive track before passing it to the rest of the body, as well as detoxifying chemicals, metabolizing drugs, and secreting bile into the intestines.

There are several conditions that can affect the liver and cause it to malfunction, which can lead to much bigger health issues. The first is Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) which is an accumulation of excess fat in the liver of people who don’t drink alcohol regularly.

This could lead to another, more serious, liver condition called NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) which is fat accumulation along with liver cell inflammation and different levels of scarring. More than three million U.S. cases are diagnosed per year. This is a potentially serious condition because it could lead to cirrhosis of the liver.

More than 200,000 cases of cirrhosis are diagnosed per year. It is a very serious condition that causes the liver to malfunction due to long-term damage. The most common cause of cirrhosis is alcoholism, but it can also be caused by obesity, uncontrolled diabetes, hepatitis B or C, or it could be hereditary, among other causes.
